The book Essentialism by Greg McKeown is my latest read. His "90 Per Cent Rule" has already helped me make some better, more focused decisions. For example, just this weekend I was offered the opportunity to pick out something from a cabinet that was once full of family heirlooms. A few small items had belonged to a great-grandmother, a woman of strong will and character. But as I looked at them, my spirit felt loaded down. After asking myself, "Am I 90% certain that I must have any of these?", I knew the answer. "If it isn't a clear "Yes", then the answer is a clear "No." I thanked my mother for her offer, saying that I already had some wonderful things to remind me of my grandmothers.
Another of McKeown's principles is that the best decision will save a thousand other future decisions. I just saved myself every decision on whether to dust or polish the items, whether to display them or box them up, or who to gift them to later on. This also ought to help me get more essential and focused in my health and fitness choices.
How would the 90 Per Cent Rule add clarity and focus to your life?
