FAQ's

What is your fitness experience? How long have you been a personal trainer?

Over 15 years ago, I began as a fitness instructor at the Lake Norman YMCA. In 2006, I earned my first personal training certification. In 2010, I earned ACE personal training certification. (ACE-CPT) In November 2012, I earned an advanced certification which is now called the ACE Certified Medical Exercise Specialist  (ACE-CMES). After hundreds of hours training healthy and at-risk individuals, I have a depth of experience with a wide variety of ages, physical, and medical conditions.

What does it mean to be “ACE certified”?

The American Council on Exercise (ACE) is the largest nonprofit fitness certification, education, and training organization in the world.  It is accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA). ACE is one of a few select certifying organizations in the entire fitness industry whose programs have been accredited.

An ACE-certified personal trainer passes an exam to demonstrate knowledge of risk factor screening, fitness assessment, nutrition, exercise science, and exercise programming.  He or she must also know appropriate exercise progressions, instructional and spotting techniques, lifestyle modifications and professional scope of practice as it relates to personal training. To maintain ACE certification, he/she is required to take continuing education courses and re-certify every two years.

ACE Certified Medical Exercise Specialist must have verified hundreds of hours of personal training experience, and specialized studies as a prerequisite to the exam. The ACE-CMES is qualified to provide in-depth preventative and post-rehabilitative fitness programming for individuals who are at risk for, or are recovering from a variety of cardiovascular, pulmonary, metabolic and musculoskeletal issues.

Do you have personal training liability insurance?

Yes, through an agency that specializes in insuring the fitness professions.  It covers me wherever I work.

Who provides the equipment and what kind?

I provide portable equipment—elastic resistance tubes, stability balls, mats, free weights, step bench, etc.  We may agree to use some of your own equipment.  I often assist my clients in choosing and purchasing their own favorites.

Do you provide nutritional counseling?

I provide guidance within generally recognized and established guidelines for healthful nutrition. You may be asked to keep a food record for several days that we will review for purposes of making healthy food choices. We may discuss hydration, appropriate protein consumption, nutritious snacks/energy food during exercise, timing of meals, and more. If you need specialized dietary assistance and specific meal plans, it is best to be referred to a registered dietician (R.D.).

Do you sell supplements or any nutritional products?

Supplying nutritional supplements to my clients is outside my scope of practice and would be in violation of the ACE Code of Ethics.  Nutritional supplements are not FDA regulated at this time and therefore may contain substances that may put a client’s health at risk.

What is a complimentary consultation?

We will meet at your favorite coffee shop or location you choose for an hour or less. Your coffee or beverage is on me! You may want to tell me about your fitness concerns and help me understand your personal vision for your best fit self and life. Based on your input, I’ll offer suggestions and options for our personal training sessions. I’ll answer your questions to your satisfaction. If you choose me for your personal trainer, then we will decide on the number of sessions, set up a training schedule, and complete the paperwork and payment.

What is a fitness assessment?

A fitness assessment uses a variety of measurements and activities to create a snapshot of your fitness and physical condition. Weight, circumference measurements, and body composition readings are done once a month. Your goals and desired results will guide the choice and frequency of additional assessments. Results are used to customize your training sessions.

What will we do during our personal training sessions? How often will we meet?

It varies for each client.  It’s important that throughout the week you are getting in enough aerobic/cardiovascular, strength, and flexibility training to reach your goals in a safe and timely manner.  If you have other regular and enjoyable physical activities, we will include those in your overall plan; and I will adjust our personal training time to fill in your fitness gaps.
